Bamboo: As The Music Plays album cover.Listening to this CD I got from my girlfriend for my birthday, I can’t help but recall the old Rivermaya days—a unique blend of vocal talents. The Bamboo Mañalac–Rico Blanco sound was simply unrivalled during the mid–nineties, when the Filipino band scene was very much alive and kicking.

Fast forward to 2004 and we have Bamboo — The Band. After quitting Rivermaya and leaving for the US several years ago, Bamboo Mañalac has returned to Manila and formed his own band, aptly named Bamboo. Joined by former Rivermaya bassist Nathan Azarcon, with Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado of Passage, they have released their first album As The Music Plays, with the current radio hit Noypi as the carrier single.

Every song highlights their music’s main selling point—Bamboo’s wonderful voice. Personally, they sound much “lighter” compared to Rivermaya (who else should I compare them to?); though I notice that some of their songs, especially those written in Filipino, has some of the Rico Blanco style of songwriting—surely a strong influence to Mañalac’s music.

Upon getting this CD and listening to it for a few days, my initial impression was that there wasn’t anything too special about their music. Not enough of the wow–factor you get listening to the Eraserhead’s Fruitcake or Cutterpillow, yet playing the songs more in Winamp (yes, I was able to rip the copy–protected CD) makes you develop a liking for their music, growing everyday. I don’t know, it must be that voice.

The band itself sounds nice and clean, the guitarwork sweet and simple. Once again, we get to enjoy Azarcon’s playful (but not funky playful) bass lines, something I noticed a lot in older Rivermaya records.

My picks: Masaya, War Of Hearts And Minds, These Days, Hudas and Noypi.

Ten songs for a CD priced less than 300 pesos. Worth every depreciating peso. If you’re a Rivermaya fan missing Bamboo’s voice, this is your fix. For casual listeners, this is certainly worth a try.

    definitely, the album is good… the music is light but there is something on their lyrics… look at noypi’s lyrics… i think its an awakening on our fellow filipino… those working as dh in other countries… those who strive in the farmlands… yung mga collonial attitude… eventhough our country’s economy sucks… its a good song for every filipino… i think its a tribute to our nationality…

    i’m drowning..hehehe, nabuhay ang dugo the first time i saw bamboo on tv after leaving rivermaya (mtv music summit for aids)…para akong baliw eh, nabalisa! don’t know how to describe the feeling nung narinig uli boses ni bamboo, bonus pa yung makita mong nagperform si bamboo…hanep ang yugyog niya, di mo maintindihan kung sayaw ba yun…..basta! the guy has the most haunting voice among filipino band vocalists….pero it’s still undeniable na maganda talaga ang songwriting ni rico …lam naman natin ang quality ng rivermaya music….but Bamboo_the_band is really doing great!!!!when bamboo was still with rivermaya, i knew he could right songs ’cause the track “Fever” from Atomic Bomb was really haunting….basta, Bamboo!!! binuhay nila ang dugo ko!!!

    at last!!! for the first time, i saw bamboo mañalac in person at the mtv rock the vote held here in SM City Cebu last May 1. It was superb!!! Grabe, bamboo”s performance was great, really great! ang gwapo nila lahat, especially of course to bamboo! sila lang talaga pinuntahan at inaabangan ko dun! it was worth watching! ü… more power to you guys!

    last sunday, i got to chance AGAIN to see bamboo perfom live! this was the greatest coz it was their album tour and guess what they sang at least 7 cuts in thier album! grabe, it was amazing! all out perfomance talaga yung idol ko! i was in the front row and took all of their pictures! hehe… but the most exciting part was i was able to go inside thier dressing room and have their autographs signed my cd!i was so speechless when i had a face to face with bamboo and the rest of the band! i never expected they were so approachable and friendly! gosh! all i did was smile, na starstruck talaga ako! i haven”t had the chance to kiss them (hehe, ang kapal ko naman if ganun di bah! hehe) but at least i got to shook their hands by congratulating thier great album and songs! sulit talaga yung album nila! thier lyrics were very inspiring! that”s it!!! thanks BAMBOO for that free concert!     For me, Bamboo made a come back not because of the fame but because MUSIC is already in his heart! Nasa dugo na niya! If you see him perform live, you can actually notice how he expresses himself on his music! He just really want to perfom! And he really love what he’s doing! That’s one character i like in him! ü

    Everyone, if you’re looking for lyrics to any of their songs, you can’t get it here. I probably won’t post it. It’s in the CD! So if you come here looking for lyrics, it’s obvious you don’t have the CD, and most probably just a pirate/MP3 copy. Mahiya naman kayo. Get the CD, the band deserves it.
