Orange and Lemons

The band Orange and Lemons is definitely one cool local act with a sound that hints of new wave groups like The Smiths, something relatively fresh for the current crop of Filipino bands. “Hanggang Kailan” has made its mark, gaining good radio playtime; and with their song “Pinoy Ako” used in the Pinoy Big Brother reality show, Orange and Lemons is sure break new grounds in OPM.

  22. unfortunately, their song is very similar to the care’s chandelier. pls go to this link

    http://media.putfile.com/TheCare-Chandeliers

here’s also an article in manila bulletin:
‘Pinoy Ako’ copied from a foreign song?

    By KAYE VILLAGOMEZ

Orange and Lemons cleared issues on alleged similarity in melody of its current hit “Pinoy Ako” to “Chandelier,” an original song of the ‘80s band The Care.

“As a musician who can transcribe music note for note and having an idea about technicalities, I can confidently say they are two different songs,” Orange and Lemons’ vocalist and guitarist Clem Castro told Manila Bulletin via text message when asked for clarification.

Star Records’ Jamie Hipe admitted that the band may have been influenced by The Care but after studying both songs they resolved that each has its own identity. “We studied the two songs and concluded that they are two different songs. Orange and Lemons may have been influenced by The Care but no, they did not copy The Care’s song. Yes, they wrote the melody and used ‘Chandelier’ as their peg,” stated Jamie of Star Records.

This negative observation began circulating last month inside the band music circle but it’s only now that the band has made a comment on it.

“Pinoy Ako” was a collaboration between the band Orange and Lemons and songwriter-record producer Jonathan Manalo who told the Bulletin that he only penned the lyrics of the song and entrusted the rest to the band.

“I can’t comment as of the moment because the melody and arrangements are all from Orange and Lemons. Though I produced the record, there hasn’t been any discussion between me and Orange and Lemons about a certain song called ‘Chandelier.’ I’ve given them 100 percent creative freedom to interpret and arrange my song,” Jonathan disclosed.

The songwriter added, “After they (members of Orange and Lemons) finished the song, I had the assurance that it was from an original material.”

Orange and Lemon’s Clem may have been irked by Bulletin’s inquiry prompting him to give the following message: “Do you actually think/believe that the melody lines are similar? You know Star Records will not declare it as they did without consultation and deliberation, which believe me, they already did.”

Orange & Lemons is composed of Clem Castro (guitars and vocals), Mcoy Fundales (guitars and vocals), Ace Del Mundo (drums), and JM Del Mundo (bass).

  37. “Mangagaya ang pinoy, kahit na anong gawin mo” dapat ang song titlle.
mangagaya sila ng song kahit na anong sabihin ninyo ginaya yung song. there are different ways to make a songs sound different but it seemed like they made some breaking arragements. Like for instance when you are goin to sing an Artist’s song . You try to make it your own by changing the arrangements like lowering those high notes and changing the chorous or anything. Remember when guys from the shows like American Idol and Rockstar INXS…they make sure that they could compress the songs let’s say 1-2 minutes atleast. Even if songs were chopped or arrange it’s still the same.In the case of Orange and Lemons they really have the same beat and how each line seems to fit every words of the song “Chandeliers” minus the chorous. Another thing is the title of the Band. They call themselves Orange and Lemons while the The Care’s album which has the track “Chandeliers” is “Diamonds and Emeralds” coincidence I don’t think so…. probably which led to the idea that they should name their band something with ?????? and ?????. get what I mean. Orang should and Lemons should have named their song “Fruit Basket” instead of “Pinoy Ako”.They’re lucky since the real band from the Uk didin’t sue them…or they haven;t heard of the new yet.

  39. what an illogical explanation above my comment. nonsense. you’re not supposed to be here in this world. im not an avid fan of oNl or whatsoever, i just dont like the way you give your comments in here. such a trash. i respect your own point of view but you should also consider some circumstances and consquences regarding this matter. it’s like a soldier going to a war without any ammunition. i just wanna tell you something that might help you to improve your coconut shell. gather more information before jumping into a conclusion and make sure that it is really convincing. its really hard to deal with people whose I.Q. is below average.

  40. haha kokei.. you make me laugh. Maybe it’s your IQ that needs a little fixing. You junk the explanation but never said why. Have you heard the song? It’s a blatant ripoff of the original. So maybe you should listen to it first before you make such stupid comments. You’re that soldier who went to war without ammunition, my friend.

  41. you guys are right… they might have copied the cares CHANDELIERS and changed it a bit! so whats wrong with that? other musicians who made it mainstream, im sure did too. in fact, there are other opm bands with this same issue… im sure you bitter guys are from bands struggling to make it to the music industry… thats how it works guys…you make the ‘MASA’ happy you get to the top…believe me.

anyway, the important thing here is if you like the song and it makes you happy then you wont care if its copied or not. to those BITTER, i suggest that you start practicing and find your image (from other foreign bands) to sell your stuff….ok?

one more thing… Pinoy Ako from PBB is not their only song. check out their latest album ‘STRIKE WHILST THE IRON IS HOT’ and also their first album ‘Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes’ which i think is even better than the recent one. grab a copy you wont regret it….

Note: songs from the albums are not copied (i think)

  42. hey guyz… galing nio talaga!!!! promeeezzzz… owkei na owkei name nio na orange and lemons. sana mag 5x platinum album nio kase ganda talaga [lalo na heaven knows!!]… lam nio ba ur d best band ever!! i’m sure marami pa su2pport sa opm kung tulad ng mga songs nio ang lumalabas. mcoy, galing mo magdala!! punta kayo ulit d2 baguio ha… (–,) GoD bleSs!!! rock on guyz!!!

  43. this band really rocks!
    i like them because they’re not pa-cute..
    God bless you guys!

  44. oh, i forget to ask where can i get a copy of THEIR album “LOVE IN THE LAND OF RUBBER SHOES AND DIRTY ICE CREAM…” Maraming Salamat!
    God speed!

  45. well.. dun sa Pinoy Ako .. madedemanda daw sila for copying one song’s tono.. narinig nga nung bro ko.. kopyang kopya daw..

  47. I like OnL, ever since I heard them at a UP concert 2 years ago. Hearing about the issue regarding the ‘Pinoy Ako’ song saddens me, that such a talented band would resort to copying another band’s music. Kaye Villagomez’s article shows that OnL doens’t seem to care about it much. Sayang, ang galing pa naman nila.

To the guy/girl who posted a reply under the name napadaan_lng (oct. 15), it’s not about being sikat or appealing to the masa. It’s about talent and honesty. Bakit ang ibang banda sumikat without having to copy? Some bands do remakes or spoofs, but they acknowledge that the material is not their own. I don’t think anyone is bitter, but I don’t think you realize the implications of the situation. It can make or break the group, and have them branded as music stealers. Plagarism taawag dun.

If OnL would come up and say that they indeed used The Care’s song, and apologize, that’s one thing. It’s another if the band would act as if they gave The Care a favor by exposing their song. Think of it. If The Care isn’t popular at all, then no one would have noticed the striking similarity of ‘Pinoy Ako’ and ‘Chandeliers’. Then walang issue. But someone did.

I really have nothing against OnL because like I said, I’ve heard them even before they went mainstream, way before this issue with ‘Pinoy Ako’ came about. My brother knows these guys personally and he can attest to the group’s talent. But it’s sad that fame would go into a their heads that they wouldn’t care about copyrights and such. I hope it wouldn’t create too much problems for them, because it would really be such a waste.

Ok lang mag-remake, ok lang gamitin ang chorus ng isang kanta for another (don’t we see it all the time with rap/hip-hop songs?) PERO dapat isipin na 1) me permission nung original artist na you can use that, preferably written consent 2) acknowledge ng band that it’s not their original song, kahit part lang.

Respect lang for your fellow musicians and artists.

  48. Hello Orange and Lemon Love ko talaga yung band nyo, kasi mabait kayong lahat, remember me from cebu

  49. amababait nyo! ur so accomodating! God bless sa inyo!
pinasaya nyo kame sa wedding nila mike & claire
    hehehehe

  50. di naman siya rip off, inadmit naman nila atang yung song na yun yong ginamit nilang peg eh

madalas din naman yun gawin ng ibang artist, local or international

binebreak lang yung mga older “influences” para makuha yung sound while avoiding the disaster of plaguarization issues.

pakinggan nyo ang kabuuan using a good headset before judging it. hindi ako music expert, but i think while there are similaries, may kakaibang original character yung sa Orange and Lemons.

Chandeliers is more Indian-ish, and i have no idea what to call it chord or note, yung pangatlo pa lang, iba na.

I don’t think they “broke” the song, (a term i heard advertising music people use on tv) they fixed it.

And as for the propriety of improving upon Western things, let’s consider everything our culture is. We are, in whole, exactly the situation this song is in. A product of various colonial influences made better by our Filipino ways.

The jeepney, which we are supposed to be proud of, according to some old english text book we used way back.

Our democracy. Our education system. Our religions. The song has been made even more symbolic of the true meaning of being Pinoy. And I don’t find this at all a negative development.

Sorry for any slight disjointedness in my comment

  51. This is a sad affair not only for Paul Simpson and Ian Broudie but to the entire filipino community since the putative song in question has been flagrantly plagiarized.
If the song were about feelings, emotions, topics of the day then maybe some or if not, most would have felt they could have let it slide except those who are personally involved. However, this song talks about the modern filipino, as of what PBB depicts, maybe its modern lifestyle…
This song, has become quite an anthem to the simple and ordinary filipino because they found pride in it and they somehow see themselves in it that they are top class and can compete with the global changes the world has to offer.
In this regard, for those that defend or support ONL or for those whose dreams were shattered and are in denial then basing things on an academician’s point of view….allegedly, they did not violate the 7 chord progression rule regarding plagiarism.
I hate to burst the bubble but the 7 chord progression rule, in landmark cases decided by foreign courts under the Intellectual Property Rights which have been in actual existence post or pre-world war 1, this is a flimsy defense since the pattern could be changed anytime by a fret or a half-note on the seventh note.
Presently, under the 8 chord progression based on the drum and baseline, if the song or composition in question fails to change at the 8th base and drum progression then it is a vital requisite to be considered as a plagiarized material not discounting the facts of testimonies of credible witnesses and “scholars” to that effect.
This is what admittedly happened during the course of this song.
The worse part in this case is for the band to not give credence to where the song was allegedly “inspired” from so as the real composers would be deprived of their royalties and their dignity.
Mind you, it’s not only our dignity and credibility as a songwriter that is in question but our respect to other’s intellectual property rights as well.
Cueshe, Session Road etc. may not be getting much attention because their songs dealt with corporeal, if not, things which do not appeal to a filipino’s sense of patriotism. However, ONL’s song just hit the x on the spot because it appeals to filipino pride in general.

Pucha naman! Mga hibang na fans,,,,,,,yung song-rip off, yung eksena pa pala eh scripted pa! Sige….magpaloko kayo ng magpaloko…..kaya di pagpalain itong bansa natin eh……

  58. OnL … Fess up. Aminin nyo nang ninakaw nyo yung kanta. Kala nyo na di mapapansin yung nakaw nyo? Kapal nyo, dinala nyo pa yung pangalan ng PINOY sa kanta nyo.

Ano ba talaga, tinamad kayong mag come-up ng sarili nyong melody? I mean, dude! ang dali lang gumawa ng melody. Hum around the chord progression, make something up.. wag kayong kopya ng kopya. Pati intro at drumbeat kinopya nyo pa.

Obvious na obvious naman na kinopya nyo yung kanta eh, ba’t di pa kayo umamin sa katarantaduhan nyo?

8 note rule?? Vanilla Ice settled with QUEEN sa bassline nya, and that’s only a bass line… sa inyo eh intro and the entire melodic idea sa verses.

Nakaw yang ginawa nyo Clem at Mcoy.. sasusunod, wag nyong dalhin yung pangalang PINOY sa pagnanakaw nyo, dinamay nyo kaming lahat eh.

    SUPPORT PINOY BANDS.. not thieves…

  59. I really love the sound of this band, in fact, they’re the staples in my soundlist right now. Their music is reminiscent of The Smiths, the housemartins, railway children and THE CARE!!! which has been the buzz around town today.

Frankly speaking, when I compared OAL’s “pinoy ako” with the care’s “chandelier”, The similarity is cunningly obvious (starting wiht the hypnotic intro up to the double time snare drumming, I even hummed the lyrics and it fitted well) sad to note that some cried foul!!!!

I am a newwave purist even up to neverheards of the british music scene. (by the way, the song “chandelier” is from the care”s album entitled “Diamonds and Emeralds”, this, according to Paul Simpson, the other half of the duo, should not be released after all.) I think music influence should have boundaries, creativity, per se, would not be creativity anymore if one tends to lean and not deviate from something that is already existing.

Still, I commend the courage of the guys in OAL because they were in the forefront of the rediscovery of this new wave genre. I still believe in this guys, just next time, be careful with the songs you choose. I do not want you guys to be in the dark, -literally!!! —archangel

  61. Pinoy Ako is un original as it gets!
First, ONL admits that lyrics were provided by Star Records.

then it turns out the melody was copied (from intro, verse and chorus) from The Care’s song entitled “Chandeliers”

Tsk tsk, they just made the greatest boo-boo of their music career, by thinking na Filipinos are TANGA! and wouldn’t know this song.

Well FYI Orange and Lemons… HINDI lang kayo ang may alam ng kantang Chandeliers

  62. first it was session road (leaving you) vs super drag (garmonbozia)

then its cueshe (stay) vs silverchair (greatest view)

now its orange and lemons (pinoy ako) vs the care (chandelier)

and btw, bamboo’s song in nescafe is not an original, it was from the boo radleys – wake up boo! just in case.. bamboo rulez though.

grabe to. talamak na ang kopyahan.

  63. You’re the analyst,
    The fungus in my milk,
    When you want no-one,
    And you got someone,
    Through the wind you crawl,
    And laugh at burning dunes,
When no-one else will ever see

Now that you know why you feel like you do
    They’re turning their head
    Whilst they wait for no-one
And finally I know why you feel like letting it go

I’m watching you, watch over me
And I’ve got the greatest view from here

    Mistakes don’t mean a thing,
    If you don’t regret them,
So pack your tactic toes for the winter
    Chain a waterfall,
To a burned and withered skin
When no-one else will ever see

I’m watching you, watch over me
And I’ve got the greatest view from here

Now that you know why you feel like you do
    They’re turning their head
    Whilst they wait for no-one
And finally I know why I feel like you’re letting me go

I’m Watching you, watch over me
And I’ve got the greatest view from here

THIS IS THE COMPLETE LYRICS OF THE SONG GREATEST VIEW BY SILVERCHAIR….INDEED, CUESHE DIDN’T VIOLATE THE LAW OF PLAGIARISM….ur wrong test

  64. pde makahingi ng lyrics ng “Chandeliers” ng The Care???

    …oooppsss wrong band pala to

  65. err…pano mo nasabing hindi plagiarized ng cueshe yung kanta ng silverchair…para malaman mo dude…plagiarism in the music industry does not depend on the similarity of the lyrics…pakinggan mo yung kanta…ng madinig mo yung TONO…

yeah sayang ang orange and lemons…mag-ingat nlng kayo sa susunod dahil para sakin may talent tlga tong banda na to…unlike some cebu acts na nagka-cut & paste ng lyrics ng iba’t ibang kanta…”…truly madly deeply…into…truly madly crazily” no talent at all…

  66. this band totally rock my world! I love you guys better than Cueshe.. totally hot!!!

  67. ORANGE AND LEMONS ang galing nyo talaga… thank you nga pla sa pag punta nyo knina sa nursing night sa uerm… da best kayo ang ganda ng mga songs nyo khit sandali lng kau sa skul!!!… nyahahaha… crush koh kaung lhat!!.. tc..

  69. am still here to support the band no matter what! you guys are talented, next time ingat nalang po.. rock on! god bless!

  70. halos lahat naman may pinagayahan.
    hale melodies resembles dishwalla melodies
cueshe resembles The Greatest View” by Silverchair. and “Perfect” by Simple Plan
Orange and Lemons = resembles “Chandelier” by the care.

Sana sinabi nalang nitong mga bands na ito na inspired sila ng mga favorite bands nila and wag na sabihin “pasalamat pa ang the care at pinasikat ang kanta nila” wag naman ganyan dude, original is original. walang kopyahan. infairness magaling naman kayo sa musika. sana next time (kung meron pa) sariling komposisyon na talaga. wag na mag comment pa na tipong iniinsulto nyo ang the care.

  71. orange and lemons form the start has been a manggagaya… imitating the likes of “the smiths” with a very obvious “english” accent.. tsk,,tsk,,, although i like the dynamics of the vocals, (choir member probably) . no matter how they defend the “pinoy ako” they really copied and paste it… from the care’s “chandelier” of course they modified some keys,,, di naman tayo tanga ,,na tinatanga nila..they really copied the chord progression,, especially the intro banjo,,, wag na silang mag-deny. wala namang magnanakaw na umaamin di ba?di may have been pressured to make the pinoy ako gig.. kaya ok lang mga pare ko.. sa susunod try be more original.

    joe

  72. http://media.putfile.com/TheCare-Chandeliers/320

if you listen to this it sounds very familiar to PBB theme song. they just changed “acouple” of riffs ands thats it. how low can you get blink.gif they ddnt even mention that its a remake. they could get sued for copyrights though. YAY laugh.gif

so people if you think that the fucking orange and lemons arent stupid fucks who just rip off songs well fuck you dumb ass.

  73. i also was a wave purists..
just to correct some errors here the band’s name was Care.. not The Care, there’s a difference…

someone says here (salbakuta) that before Lotus Eaters were formed, Care was their band… None of the members of Care duo was a member of lotus eaters…two legends of the liverpool scene during the 80s ian broudie and paul simpson came from different bands… Wild Swans and Broudie, well there’s a lot (original mirrors) na lang and has been a producer of echo and the bunnymen, and icicle works…Lotus Eaters was Jeremy Kelly(with Simpson on Wild Swans) and Peter Coyle…

OnL i’ve heard first was ok due to the very observed influences…. Listen and sing to music of OnL and not appreciate The Smiths or Morissey, then you’re just like the lot a fucking bunch of puppets.. that’s the great effect of publicity and idiot box(tv)..

  74. to OnL no matter what u guys read or hear on bad comments pls. don’t feel bad . always be humble kahit ano pa sabihin nila. if you humble yourself God will exalt you. we really love your music here in LA. We love you guys

  75. Poseurs. Lame name (What’s so fruity about your music?). The first time I saw them, well, magaling kayo mag-COVER ng songs, and that’s all.

Ang tagal na ng Session Road, pero ever since wala silang significant impact. Cueshe is a show band. Just like Oranges & Lemon, they are desperate for a hit, so they plagiarize.

In time, malalaos din sila kung patuloy nilang gagawin to, which just supports the fact that they just don’t have ‘it’ para tumagal. One-hit, two-hit wonders, I don’t care.

Sa mga kumukonsinte ng pangongopya, well, you are the typical Pinoy. What I’m saying doesn’t apply to crab mentality, kasi they really did something shameful and wrong, the irony of “Pinoy Ako”… palitan na natin yung pagiging ignorante at mangmang natin, lumang Pinoy na yan. STRIKE WHILST THE IRON IS HOT!

Sa Orange & Lemon (is the lead guitarist the main songwriter? sya yung matapang e), just write your own songs, mas masarap yung feeling ng pagiging sikat pag alam mong sarili mong gawa yung hit mo. Di ba?

  76. Keep on rockin,baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont mind them guyz…That is the usual case if other people are envy in your success…just believe in yourself…

  77. Sayang… I really like your song entitled “Pinoy Ako.” But then, I was disappointed nung marinig ko yung original song kung saan kinuha yung melody ng kanta.

Pinoy Ako by Orange and Lemons vs Chandeliers by The Care

Kayo na po ang humusga… for me, there’s a big difference between INSPIRED and RIPPED OFF.

  78. Ito ang sabi nila naman sa inquirer:

“We have no malicious intent,” says vocalist
and guitarist Clem Castro. “In fact, we’re not even
aware that such songs already exist.”

Ha? Eto o, bistado na kayo po! Inamin, binawi, binawi, binawi. ano ito, eat bulaga?

  79. Pinoy Ba Ako?
    By Ponkan and Calamansi

    Lahat tayo ay naging biktima
sa dinig pa lang ay malalaman na
    di man ito kagustuhan
    ngunit ito ang katotohanan

Original na lyrics ang hanap ko
    magbibigay ng paghalaga sayo
    Nais mo bang ipakilala
    kung sino ka ngang talaga

    Pinoy ikaw ay Pinoy
    ipakita sa mundo
    kung anong ginaya mo
    Nahihiyang Pinoy
    Wag kang mang gagaya
    maging original ka
    Pinoy ako Pinoy tayo

Pakita mo ang tunay kung sino ka
wag kang umasa lang sa iba
Kailangan ay perpekto basta ito ay totoo

Original na lyrics ang hanap ko
    magbibigay ng paghalaga sayo
    Nais mo bang ipakilala
    kung sino ka ngang talaga

    Pinoy ikaw ay Pinoy
    ipakita sa mundo
    kung anong ginaya mo
    Nahihiyang Pinoy
    Wag kang mang gagaya
    maging original ka
    Pinoy ako Pinoy tayo

    Talagang ganyan ang buhay
    Wag tayong masanay
    walang ring mangyayari kung
    kung laging nakikigaya

    Wag ipagmalaki ang sarili
    kung ito ay yong gawain
    “Ang Lagi mong Iisipin
    Kayang Kopyahin”

    Pinoy ikaw ay Pinoy
    ipakita sa mundo
    kung anong ginaya mo
    Nahihiyang Pinoy
    Wag kang mang gagaya
    maging original ka
    Pinoy ako Pinoy tayo

  80. to sister or brother archie,
masyado ka namang galit na galit…easy lang at nakakahiya ka naman…pati ba naman isang kanta e nag-papasira pa nang beauty mo…

question ko lang po sa iyo…..have you ever bought pirated cds or pirated dvd of movies? or had you ever had someone burn some Filipino or foreign artists songs para sa yo? tingin mo, pagnanakaw din ba yun? kasi wala rin namang ikaw permission from the artist(s) yung ginagawa mo diba….so technically ang dami mo nang na-utakan na artists, nanakawan din…kumita ka rin kasi nakatipid ka ng pera sa pag-gawa nun diba?

  81. saan po ba available ang first album ng OnL?
    para anman makabili na ko…
